Why Spring Is the Most Important Spraying Window of the Year

Spring is when the battle against weeds is won or lost. The conditions that drive pasture growth, warming temperatures, soil moisture, and longer days, are the exact same conditions that send weeds into explosive growth. Get in early with a well-timed spray program and you'll knock them back before they set seed and compound next year's problem. Leave it too long, and you're fighting a much harder war come summer.

The Spring Spraying Calendar: Timing Your Applications

August, September: Early Spring, The Broadleaf Window

This is your prime window for broadleaf weed control in pastures. Weeds are actively growing, they're small and have low reserves, and selective herbicides work best on actively growing tissue. Key targets in this window:

Capeweed, most susceptible when young rosettes are actively growing, before bolting

Thistles (Scotch, Nodding, Variegated), attack before the stem extends; rosette stage is your best opportunity

Dock and Sorrel, treat when actively   growing in early spring for best uptake

Paterson's Curse / Salvation Jane, rosette to early bolt stage, before flowering

Wild turnip and Wild Radish, early vegetative stage before stem extension

Key tip: Always check your pasture species before selecting a herbicide. Some selective broadleaf herbicides can damage legume-based pastures (particularly clovers). Read the label carefully or consult your local agronomist.

September, October: Mid-Spring, Grass Weeds and Fence Lines

As temperatures climb, annual grass weeds begin to stand out against your pasture. This is also the window for cleaning up fence lines, laneways, and around infrastructure before growth becomes unmanageable. Targets:

• Barley grass and ryegrass, in non-selective situations (fence lines, laneways), treat before seed head emergence
• Wild oats, target before the flag leaf stage in cropping situations
• Serrated tussock, actively growing spring plants respond better to treatment than dormant summer plants
• Blackberry and other woody weeds, spring shoot growth is the most susceptible stage; apply systemic herbicides when new growth is actively extending

October, November: Late Spring, Summer Annual Weed Prevention

As spring transitions to summer, the focus shifts to preventing summer annual weeds from establishing. In cropping and horticulture situations, pre-emergent herbicides applied ahead of the summer weed flush can significantly reduce the burden later in the season. This is also the last practical window to manage pasture weeds before dry conditions reduce herbicide uptake.

5 Rules for Getting Spring Spraying Right

1. Spray on the right growth stage, not the calendar date. The calendar is a guide. What matters is the weed's growth stage, check the label for the target growth stage and match your timing to that, not a fixed date.
2. Spray when weeds are actively growing. Herbicide uptake requires active growth. Stressed, dormant, or drought-affected weeds take up far less chemical and give you poor results. After rain and in warming conditions is usually ideal.
3. Avoid spraying in wind. Drift onto non-target species, including your own pasture, crops, or a neighbour's paddock, is a serious issue. Aim for calm mornings with low wind speed.
4. Calibrate your sprayer before the season. An uncalibrated sprayer is either under-dosing (poor results) or over-dosing (wasted chemical and crop damage risk). Run a calibration check at the start of each season.
5. Keep records. Note what you sprayed, where, what rate, and what the outcome was. This is invaluable for planning next year's program and for managing chemical resistance over time.

Before You Start: Sprayer Maintenance Checklist

If your sprayer has been sitting since last season, do these checks before your first spring run:

• Flush the tank and lines with clean water, old chemical residue can damage new applications or harm non-target species
• Check all hose connections and fittings for cracking or weeping
• Inspect nozzles for wear or blockage, worn nozzles affect spray pattern and rate
• Test the pump at operating pressure before loading chemical
• Check and replace any seals or O-rings that look worn or brittle
